FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Where is St. Lucia?
Pronounced Saint Loo-sha. St. Lucia is a small island country in the Eastern Caribbean.
You can read more about St. Lucia here.
Why is Breaking the Silence in St. Lucia?
Breaking the Silence is a community-based program that was initiated by members of the community in St. Lucia. Our vision is to someday replicate Breaking the Silence in other countries in the Caribbean region. (Or elsewhere in the world... why not?)
Why do I see mostly images of girls in your materials?
Breaking the Silence began with a specific focus on the connection between gender inequity and the spread of HIV/AIDS. Because girls in the Caribbean are contracting HIV at a rate significantly higher than boys the same age, our pilot project was designed to empower girls with a variety of skills they could use to help stop the spread of HIV/AIDS. Future programs will most likely include boys, while retaining a special emphasis on gender equity. For more information about gender and HIV/AIDS click here.
How many of the program participants have HIV/AIDS?
HIV/AIDS is still highly stigmatized in the Caribbean, and St. Lucia is no exception. People who are living with HIV/AIDS generally do not publicly disclose their status, for a variety of complicated reasons primarily related to stigma and discrimination. Therefore, we do not ask our participants to disclose their status to us.
Where does your funding come from?
Currently, Breaking the Silence is funded primarily through the generosity of individual donations in St. Lucia and abroad. The majority of our resources, however, are actually donated services and volunteer labor. We are also actively applying for grants and developing various earned income strategies (tape sales, equipment rentals, video production services, consultations, etc.). How can I help?
The best way to support Breaking the Silence is to send a donation! Also, please spread the word about our program. Click here for more information on how to help.
